Description
Excavations in 1936-1938 under the direction of Mr Varley at Eddisbury hillfort. In total 4 areas were excavated and six sondages were cut and a substantial volume of evidence produced.
This series of excavations consisted of four large trenches, numbered 1–4, and six narrow sondages, labelled a–f, excavated to reveal additional crosssections that might confirm the evidence obtained from the main trenches. All of these trenches and sondages were sited with the intention of targeting the earthworks defining the northern and eastern sides of the enclosure. The four main trenches were positioned in order to investigate putative entrances in the north-western (Area 1) and eastern sides of the vallum (Area 3), a junction between different elements of the earthworks (Area 2), and an area (Area 4) where the remains of buildings had been evident at ground level.
