Description
In 1974 a causeway was constructed across the moat and during its installation a rench was dug through the fill. This revealed the original profile of the moat which had been cut into the marl and clay. The homogenous fill contained only 19th century pottery. It seems likely that this part of the moat was cleared out and left open as a water feature when Hallwood was remodelled as a Georgian county house in the 18th century. The other ditches were probably filled at this time.
The Georgian house had its impressice south front demolished after bomb damage in 1941. The building now forms part of a large public house, "The Tricorn". During its conversion by Bass Charrington it became clear that the core of the building is much earlier than its façade would suggest. Blocked 17th century windows, and a wood framed wattle and daub interior, partition wall, with a wooden door frame of probable 16th century date, testify to its earlier constructional history. The door frame has been preserved in situ. To the north of the house is a fine barn, stone faced on its eastern front with pillasters, pedimented doorways, oval windows and other decorative features. The barn is now used as a restaurant.
