Description
Between October 1973 and April 1974, excavation took place in the orchard of Peel Farm, Astbury, Grid ref, SJ854612 led by Dr. F Celoria of the Adult Education Dept. of Keel University. The dig was essentially a rescue operation on a moated site which was due to be destroyed by the erection of a large shippen. Members of the Keele Adult Education classes in Archaeology, together with local volunteers, excavated a large proportion of the site hoping to find the foundations or any remains of a sixteenth century manor house which was believed to have stood within the confines of the original square moat.
