Description

In 1737, at Mr Philpot's House on Newgate St. East, a sculptural fragment depicting a retiarius was found (1). At the time of the discovery, Newgate was Fleshmonger's Ln., and the location (with hindsight) was described as being fifty yards away from the north eastern end of the amphitheatre (2). The original object was lost, but a cast is held at the museum.
