Description

The Greyhound, 'Forest Street' (now Foregate St.): Red sandstone altar found at the house of Richard Tyrer outside the Eastgate. Described as coming from a depth of 'more than two ells' below the surface, during the excavation of a cellar (2). Initially reported to have been found in 1653. Altar remained in Tyrer's possession until 1675 when it was transferred to the Ashmolean (1) (2). Notable for being the first Roman altar recorded in the city (6)
