Description

Archaeological observations carried out during alterations to the ground floor of 'Quaintways', Northgate Street in 1975 observed limited archaeological evidence of pre medieval activity. The work was carried out due to the possibility of discovering the eastern boundary of the Principia and its adjacent street (1). The previously preserved hypocaust system in the north east corner was encountered but not investigated further. No further evidence from the eastern part of the site was encountered as the installation of the present concrete floor had truncated all earlier evidence. Towards the western part of the site the area had been truncated by the construction of 17th-18th century cellaring. Only faint traces of Roman stratigraphy in the form of pink and brown flecked sand were identified. (1)
