Description

Bridge Street West, 1899: Excavations for the hotel on the site of the former Grotto Inn recorded, site was monitored by the Society and Post medieval coins and a medieval stoop were recorded along with several Roman column bases resting on a wall. Evidence for a street also noted. Roman finds included coins, bronze stud and pottery (1) (3) (6) CHER 8155; 8354; 10113; 10100/1 Eastgate Street, 1899: Pieces of lead water piping with an inscription on a raised panel, found at the premises of Messrs Oakes and Griffiths (1) (2). Alternately, other reports state that lead piping was found in Eastgate St. North on the premises of Messrs Jones & co., dating to 79AD (4). CHER 8379/1; 8412/3 City Baths, Union Street, 1899: Substantial U-shaped ditch on a north-south alignment approximately 215 feet long and eleven feet deep (4). CHER 8089/3
