Description

Watkin records that in 1813, beside the old southern road, a number of vases and lamps packed into cells and a demi-figure habited in sacerdotal costume, were found during the excavation of a cellar at Sir John Cotgreave's, in Netherleigh. It has been suggested that these finds were hidden by the Mithraeum in the fourth century (1). Another source states that these were 'cinerary urns containing ashes and lamps, arranged in cells, of four or six to a cell' (2).
