Description

The site lies in a location where remains dating to the Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods may be anticipated. Eight evaluation trenches were excavated. The results produced no clear evidence to suggest activity on the site earlier than the post-medieval period. Substantial earth moving has taken clearly taken place to the rear of Woodville during the post-medieval period. Linear features and two postholes of post-medieval date were sealed below the redeposited material. The irregularity and alignment of one linear feature suggested that it may be earlier than the other post-medieval features identified, but there was no corroborating artefactual evidence. It has been concluded that the proposed development area holds little archaeological potential. However, it may be prudent to monitor any future groundworks in order to elucidate the function and extent of the features recorded during the evaluation.
