Description

Denna Hall LL16 (Previously LL BN/2) Address: Denhall Lane, Burton Architect: John Summers of J Summers Ironworks Date: 1831 with 1865 additions Description The building at the core of this agglomeration of late additions is a late Georgian style (actually “Guillemean” i.e. from the reign of William IV) three storey farmhouse built on the site of an earlier (1539) Denna Hall, with links back to the adjacent Hospital of St Andrew (1237). The entrance porch is an 1865 addition, incorporating older stonework, perhaps from the hospital of St Andrew. In the grounds is a sandstone single cell tower building that may have been a lookout, reflecting the earlier purpose of giving aid to the poor and the shipwrecked; alternatively it may be merely a decorative “gazebo” in the Victorian garden furniture manner, in the style of a lookout. House had its own electric power generator (extant) and its own gasworks. Materials *Pitched slate roofs, flat roofs, walls all pebbledashed light grey over brick and possibly sandstone. *Distinctive two storey bow window to frontage, curved 16 pane sashes. *Other windows of various types, many altered. Condition *Fair to good. *Vacant at present (May 1997). Formerly a nursing home. Updated November 2006
