Description

St Winefride’s School House LL5 (Previously LL NN/3 ) Address: Burton Road, Neston Architect: Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin 1812-1852 (Architect to the Earl of Shrewsbury) Date: 1856 Description The land in the 19th century was owned by the Earl of Shrewsbury, and became the absolute property of the R.C. Diocese of Shrewsbury in 1897. Pitched slated roof with parapeted gable ends, trefoil cusped decoration to spandrel of gable. Walls of Ashlar coursed sandstone with simple rectangular openings for doors and windows. Windows are hinged casement with dividing stone mullions, first floor windows gabled into roof. Later single storey addition to front obscures setting of main school room window. A simple building demonstrating Pugin’s rule that “All ornament should consist of enrichment of the essential construction of the building.” Condition Good Current Use In use as dwelling.
