Description
Dundas Barn
LL34 (Previously LL WN/8)
Address: Old Barn Lane off Neston Road, Willaston
Architect: Not known
Date: Not known – late C17 with Victorian addition
Description
L-shaped barn constructed in two stages. Located in village typical of pre-enclosure farmstead around former farmyard. Oldest section runs E-W and displays clamped purlin construction with substantial oak trusses typical of the late C17th. There is some evidence of earlier box framing of the walls which has largely been replaced with brick although some stonework is visible at the east gable. Much of the exterior has since been covered in a crude render.
There is evidence of a threshing floor but only evidence of one cart entrance which opens out onto the yard (the corresponding door on the other side of the barn has been filled in).
The roof is covered in slate on the southern slope and a combination of roman clay tiles and corrugated plastic on the northern slope.
The western wing is joined at right angles to the older barn and is Victorian. It is constructed of local brick with a slate roof.
Condition
Good.
Current use
In use as domestic dwellings.
