Description
Whitby Road Methodist Church
LL71 (Previously LL EP/14)
Address: Whitby Road, Ellesmere Port
Architect: Not known
Date: 1914
Description
The Methodist Chapel on Whitby Road was completed in 1914. The building is constructed in Ruabon brick and Welsh slate and features gothic detailing particularly around the main entrance of the church. The rest of the church, such as the offices to the rear, are not so well detailed and a crude prefabricated concrete hall was added post WWII.
The interior is generally plain but there is a powerful hammer beam roof in the church hall. The restrained interior of the church hall still retains its pews, organ and vestibule.
Primitive Methodism was important to the town’s early civic life, being closely associated with the Liberal Party who dominated the early Ellesmere Port District Council.
Condition
Good.
Current Use
Currently in use as Trinity Methodist Church, creche and “Live at Home” project.
