Description
The Billet Arm, Shropshire Union Canal
LL14 (Previously LL EP/13)
Address: A canal dock off the Shropshire Union Canal (Wirral Branch) at the rear of DSM Resins premises. Road access via Cromwell Road.
Architect: Wolverhampton Corrugated Iron Company. LNW Railway.
Date: 1905 – extended in width 1906
Description
The dock was built shortly after the Wolverhampton Corrugated Iron Company moved from Wolverhampton to Ellesmere Port at the turn of the century. The dock was used to tranship raw materials such as steel bars, spelter and galvanising materials, as well as transporting corrugated iron via barge to the Ellesmere Port Docks Basin for transhipment to ships for export.
A two bay pitched roof structure of corrugated iron on steel trusses and columns. Two concrete sided basins with central divider carrying the centre support to the roof bays.
The basins were designed to accommodate barges or Mersey “flats” measuring 72’ (21m) long x 14’ (4.3m) wide or two narrowboats each 7’ (2.1m) wide.
Condition
Poor/dangerous.
Current use
Disused at present. Basin in need of dredging.
