Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SW WHITE FRIARS 595-1/3/452 (South side) 10/01/72 Nos.19 AND 21 GV II 2 town houses, now offices. Early C19 on cellars of medieval origin. Sandstone; brown brick above ground floor level, in Flemish bond to front; parapet hides roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 4 windows. Rendered plinth; the sashes are recessed with painted stone sills and wedge lintels with cambered soffits. The first storey has a door to No.19 of 2 doubly sunk panels in a plain pilastered case with hood on moulded cornice, four 12-pane sashes and a door to No.21 of 6 fielded panels with radial bar overlight in case similar to that of No.19. Second storey sillband and four 12-pane sashes; 4 short 6-pane sashes to the third storey; painted stone cornice and one-course parapet; central ridge chimney. INTERIOR: cellars to both former houses have narrow front cross-chambers partitioned off probably early C19 in portion of the cellars probably under the pavement; the cross-chamber of No.21 is brick barrel-vaulted. Medieval coursed rubble sandstone walling to the east party wall of No.19, the west party-wall of No.21, the front wall of both cellars and an altered cross-wall with a broad opening between the first and second main chambers of each house. No.21 has broad sandstone steps to a former front entrance to the cross-chamber, now blocked. The front main chamber of No.19 has one longitudinal oak chamfered beam; the second room has 2 such beams; the ceiling structure to No.21 is renewed; brick floors; stone winder stair through 180 degrees to No.19; stone stair with corner winders to No.21. The hall has a round archway with carved consoles; the first storey front room of each house has C18 plaster cornice. The stair in each house has a narrow well, shaped brackets, curved strings and winders at the turns, steps covered, 2 stick balusters per step and swept rail with wreath. The second storey has door of 4 slightly bevelled panels; a simple fireplace in a back room. The third storey retains no visible features of special interest. Windows have sub-panels and/or panelled shutters. Listing NGR: SJ4046266076
