CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SW WHITE FRIARS 595-1/3/449 (South side) 10/01/72 No.11 GV II* Town house now office. Early C18, altered; cellar of medieval origin. Brown brick in irregular bond; grey slate roof has ridge at right-angle to street, hipped to front. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus cellar and attics, 4 windows; flush sashes with painted stone sills and segmental brick heads. The first storey has two 12-pane sashes, 2 stone steps to door of 2 short, 4 long and 2 short fielded panels in a late Georgian pedimented case of painted wood with fluted pilasters and a 12-pane sash; a 3-course floor-band; four 12-pane sashes to the second storey; floor-band with one brick course oversailing 2 courses; four 9-pane sashes to the third storey; central square downpipe; painted stone cornice; chimneys removed. The lower part of the rear is extended, with the original gable visible above. INTERIOR: smallish cellar has probably medieval rubble sandstone mainly in rear wall, a roughly-chamfered oak cross-beam, an inserted wooden stair and an oak door of 2 fielded panels. The hall has floor of shaped coloured tiles and 2 chamfered cross-beams with bar-and-ogee stops. The front room has altered door with bolection lower panel, walls with a row of wide fielded panels beneath the dado rail and a full-height row above, of oak; oak cornice with dentils; a cupboard within the panelling right of chimney-breast, panelled shutters to embrasures and 2 chamfered cross-beams with bar-and-ogee stops. The altered rear east room has oak door of 2 fielded panels, a simply-chamfered longitudinal beam and indication of a former inglenook. The rear west room had a 2-panel oak door, panelling similar to the front room but painted, a corner breast now panelled, 2-panel ceiling with cornice; inserted opening to the C20 assembly room behind. The oak open-well stair of 9 flights has in the first storey open string with shaped brackets, turned newels, 3 column-on-vase balusters per step, each central baluster with barleysugar column, swept rails with wreaths, lowest step with curtail at each end and panelled dado with panelled pilasters; the flights to the third and attic storeys are simple with square newels having pendants, closed strings and straight rails. The second storey landing has panelled north and east walls, similar to first storey rooms, oak doors of 2 short;2 long;2 short fielded panels and an oak cornice. The front room has oak panelling as to the first storey front room, panelled oak embrasure seats and shutters, a cupboard within the panelling right of fireplace, a chamfered longitudinal beam with bar-and-ogee stops and an oak cornice; the smaller west front room has a simple fireplace in a corner breast and a simply-chamfered cross-beam. The rear east room, largely stripped, has a simply-chamfered longitudinal beam; the rear west room has a simple fireplace in a corner breast. The third storey front west room has painted door of 2 fielded panels on blacksmith's H-hinges and corner fireplace; the front east room has door of 2 fielded panels; the rear rooms have similar doors, that to west having an early C19 cast-iron fireplace in corner breast.
