Description
CHESTER CITY (IM)
SJ4066SE NORTHGATE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/311 (East side) Nos.26 & 28 Street
GV II
2 narrow shops, now joined as one shop, each approx 3m wide, with former living accommodation above. Probably on the site of a single medieval house, No.26 is probably 1820s and No.28 1830s. No.26 is Flemish bond brown brickwork to front and No.28 stuccoed brick; grey slate roofs have ridges at right angles to the street with hips to the front and gable-ends of English garden wall bond brown brickwork to the rear. EXTERIOR: No.26 is 4 storeys and No.28 three storeys. The shopfronts have reeded pilasters, paired at the south end and between Nos 26 & 28 and triple at the north-west corner of No.28 to Music Hall Passage; an openwork timber basket arch to each shopfront and to the passage. Modern glazed shopfronts set back behind the pilasters and arches. No.26 has a 12-pane recessed sash to each of the second and third storeys and a 6-pane window to the fourth storey; parapet with moulded cornice. No.28 has a replaced window to the second storey in an opening with architrave and entablature, a 9-pane recessed sash in an architrave to the third storey and a cornice above a raised panel, beneath a parapet with a plain coping. The face to the covered Music Hall Passage and the windows to the rear are altered; flush verges to rear gables. The shops replaced 2 low 2-storey buildings shown c1820 on Batenham's engraving. INTERIOR: there is no evidence of a cellar. Upper rooms have some simple plaster cornices and panelled window reveals.
