CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE NORTHGATE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/281 (West side) 10/01/72 No.19 Street (Formerly Listed as: NORTHGATE STREET (West side) No 19 Row) GV II Undercroft and shop. With some medieval masonry but almost wholly rebuilt c1900 probably by John Douglas, then senior partner of Douglas and Minshull. Sandstone, timber frame with plaster panels, grey-green slate roof. EXTERIOR: cellar and 3 storeys. The Row arcade of 3 bays is 2 steps above pavement level, with 2 rather slender Tuscan columns of painted sandstone between antae. A plain bressumer carries the second storey which has a moulded base-fascia, narrow and braced panels, a central oriel of 6 lights with moulded mullions and transoms, the end lights forming quadrants and the 2 central lights projecting further as a semicircular bow; there is an adjoining transomed sidelight in each side bay. The third storey, jettied on carved brackets, has braced panels, 2 canted oriels of 5 lights with moulded mullions, on central brackets; 2 gables jettied above the oriels, each with 2 ornate quatrefoil panels; moulded bargeboards. The rear is of brick, with no visible features of special interest. INTERIOR: there is medieval stonework in the rear stockroom in the Row storey. The undercroft is not readily accessible and has not been inspected at time of survey. There are no other visible features of special interest. Nos 5-31 (odd) are collectively known as `Saddler's Row' and were previously listed as Row numbers. (Chester Rows Research Project: Harris R: Northgate Street: 1989-). Listing NGR: SJ4051266367
