Gas showroom on site of medieval undercroft and town house. Rebuilt 1936 for the Chester United Gas Company. Probably steel-framed but expressed as a timber frame with plaster panels; purple slate roof with gable to street. 3 storeys plus attic. The modern shopfront is set back in an opening with massive end stanchions in timber cases on stone-clad battered plinths. Arched braces to a bressumer with a barleysugar arris-mould; rectangular small-framing to upper storeys and attic gable. Square 8-light mullioned and transomed leaded oriel to second storey, with carved base and crown, on 7 shaped brackets; jetty to third storey on consoles; bressumer carved CHESTER HOUSE; a 6-light leaded casement stands proud of the wall above 6 slightly coved panels; tie-beam inscribed REBUILT 1936 A.D. The attic has a 2-light leaded casement; plain bargeboards and finial of oak; all windows have metal sub-frames.
