Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SW NICHOLAS STREET MEWS 595-1/3/274 (East side) No.3 and attached outbuildings to north GV II Coachman's cottage, coach houses and stable, now office, lockup garages, workshop and storage. Early C19, altered. Brown brick in English garden wall bond to the cottage and irregular bond to the former coach houses and stables; grey slate roofs, that to the coach houses and stables replaced in corrugated asbestos. The cottage has a replaced door of 6 fielded panels with blocked fanlight under a gauged-brick round arch; one 16-pane recessed sash under a camber-arched head to each storey; flush eaves and verges. The south gable-end to Grey Friars has a recessed 9-pane sash under a camber-arched head to each storey, a flush gable chimney just before the ridge and a small one-storey rear outshut. The former coach houses and stables, attached to north, have 2 coach-doorways in recessed camber-arched openings with framed and boarded doors, hinge-stones and blocked overlights; a third doorway is altered, with smaller doors and a 1-pane overlight; 2 pitching-eyes with shaped sandstone sills in the former hayloft. The building has no visible features of special interest further north. INTERIORS not inspected. Included as a survival, rare in Cheshire, of a mews cottage, coach houses and stables.
