Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE NEWGATE STREET 595-1/4/264 (East side) 10/01/72 No.23 GV II Modest cottage, now office. Probably early C18, altered. Flemish bond brown brick with grey slate roof. 2 storeys of one bay. The first storey has a 2-panel door, south and a 1-pane shop window, both replaced. 3-course second storey floorband; 2 replaced flush horned sashes have painted stone sills and wedge lintels with false keystones; 3-course band beneath brick parapet with plain painted stone coping; a chimney behind the main ridge; a wing behind having, like the main block, ridge parallel with the front has a north gable chimney and modest windows. INTERIOR: doors of 4 and 5 fielded panels; embrasures with panels beneath the windows; some Georgian cornices. An open-well stair of high quality for an apparently simple dwelling, has open string with carved brackets, 3 column-on-vase balusters per step, rose, swept rail and pilastered dado. The narrow hall has segmental archways. A rear stair has square newels with knobs, closed string and turned balusters. Listing NGR: SJ4072066198
