CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SW GREY FRIARS 595-1/3/191 (South side) 10/01/72 Nos.1 AND 1A (Formerly Listed as: NICHOLAS STREET No.28A) GV II Includes: No.28A NICHOLAS STREET. 3 town houses, then Territorial Army centre, now offices. Probably early C19, altered internally. Stucco; grey slate roof to Nos 1 Grey Friars and 28A Nicholas Street; flat roof to No.1A Grey Friars. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys to Nicholas Street, 2 storeys to Grey Friars. The first storey to Nicholas Street has, north to south, a tripartite 4; 12; 4-pane sash, 2 recessed 12-pane sashes, a door of 6 fielded panels and a tripartite 4; 12; 4 pane sash; second storey sillband and sashes of the same types and sequence as to the first storey; the third storey has 3 recessed 6-pane sashes; painted stone sills and heads painted as if wedge lintels; cornice. The face to Grey Friars of No.1 has a door of 4 fielded panels above 2 flush panels in a doorcase with architrave, pilasters, frieze and cornice; a recessed 12-pane sash to each side; sillband and three recessed 12-pane sashes to second storey; gable with flush ridge chimney. The rear has 3 recessed 12-pane sashes to each storey, band and parapet gable. No.1A Grey Friars is recessed; some features are probably replaced, but facsimile with those of No.1 Grey Friars: 4 recessed 12-pane sashes and a door of 6 fielded panels to the lower storey; 3 recessed 12-pane sashes, plus a small 4-pane sash in each wing, to the upper storey; sillband, band to base of parapet and coping. The west end is plain and the south face modernised. INTERIOR: No.1 Grey Friars has cellars, part with brick barrel vault, wine bins and stone steps; cellar walls of rubble sandstone and brick. Apart from the cellars, the interiors are altered. Included for group value. Listing NGR: SJ4030866076
