CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE EASTGATE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/179 (South side) 28/07/55 No.24 Street and No.30 Row (Formerly Listed as: EASTGATE STREET Nos 22 & 24 Street & Nos 24-30 (even) Row) GV II Undercroft shop, Row shop and accommodation now storage. Rebuilt late C19 on site of former undercroft and town house. Timber-framed front with plaster panels; brick to rear; grey slate roof at right-angle to front. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys including undercroft and Row, plus attic. The street-level shopfront is a continuation of that to No.22 Street (qv), as is the soffit to the kiosk above in front of the Row walk, with small sgraffiti in plaster panels. The Row walk and Row shopfront have no features of special interest. The third storey, directly above the face of the Row-front kiosk, has broad, probably false, end and central posts, 2 canted 3-light oriels with mullions, transoms and semicircular panes with keyblocks above transoms of central lights; a close-studded panel to each side of each oriel, with a cross rail. The gable, jettied on 3 shaped brackets, has a row of 12 shaped panels, a pair of 2-light mullioned leaded casements with curved herringbone bracing to each side and a jettied collar with straight herringbone struts above; moulded bargeboards and finial; small-framed east return. INTERIOR: the shops have all features covered. The upper rooms could not be inspected, but the third storey is stated to have plan and some doors and mouldings intact and the attic to have no features of special interest; the visible features of the cellar late C19 and C20.
