CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE EASTGATE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/177 (South side) 10/01/72 No.20 Street and No.22 Row (Formerly Listed as: EASTGATE STREET No.20 Street & No.22 Row) GV II Undercroft and town house, half a bay wide, now undercroft shop, Row shop and disused accommodation. Mid C17 and early C19. Brown brick in Flemish bond to front, hiding timber framing; grey slate roof, ridge at right-angle to front. EXTERIOR: modern shopfront to street frontage, between early fluted pilasters and plain fascia of wood. Simple cast-iron Row-front railing; painted brick end-piers; sloped boarded stallboard 2.05m from front to back has side showcases; concrete flag Row walk; shopfront in Edwardian manner has recessed glazed door of one shaped pane, panelled stallboard; 2-pane window with slender turned mullion; plaster ceiling to stallboard and Row. One window each to third and fourth storeys, with painted stone sills and wedge lintels, a recessed 4-pane horned sash to the third storey and an original recessed 9-pane sash to the fourth storey; painted stone cornice. INTERIOR: a glazed panel in the Row shop entrance shows an angle brace and wattle and daub of the east party wall, in situ, suggesting substantial presence, otherwise covered, in Row and possibly undercroft storeys, of the C17 structure. Early C19 cornice in Row storey; some C19 cornices in third storey. The east wall in the fourth storey is timber-framed, indicating that the front and back parts of the property, each built independently, are both C17. Listing NGR: SJ4059266278
