CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE BRIDGE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/74 (East side) No.49 Street and No.57 Row GV II Undercroft shop, Row shop and accommodation, now undercroft shop and office at Row level and above; on site of former undercroft and town house. Rebuilt 1891 by WM Boden. Painted brick and timber framing with plaster panels; brown tile roof, ridge parallel with street. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys including street and Row levels. Modern shopfront with covered entry to Feathers Lane, north. Brick end-piers and timber rail on shaped splat balusters to Row front; boarded sloped stallboard 2.16m from front to back; quarry-tiled Row walk; modern quasi-Georgian office front has door of 6-fielded panels and radial-bar overlight, fielded sub-panels to small-pane window and modillion cornice; Row-top bressumer on shaped brackets; pendant to segmental timber arch over entry. A hipped lean-to roof on ornate brackets projects beneath an entry-bay cross casement and intersects a 6-light canted oriel on the main bay; the third storey wall is painted brick. The timber-framed fourth storey, flush over the entry, is boldly jettied on shaped brackets to the main bay; a row of ornate small panels across both bays; a 2-pane casement standing proud on brackets over the entry; a 6-light square oriel on the main bay; arch-braced side panels; a 1-pane window in each return of the jetty; windows have leaded glazing above transoms; a coved jetty to the main-bay front gable; tie-beam inscribed 1891; S-curved herringbone struts; moulded bargeboards and a shaped finial; a red-brick ridge chimney. INTERIOR: the fourth storey has 1891 partitions; the lower storeys are lined. The external expression of this item is similar to Nos 3, 5 & 7 Street and Row (qv) by the same architect.
