Undercroft and town house rebuilt probably late C19 as an extension to department store comprising Nos.44, 46, 48 and 50 Street and Row (qv). Brick, sandstone and cast-iron; grey slate roof with ridge at right angle to front. EXTERIOR: 5 storeys including undercroft and Row levels. Cast-iron columns behind modern shopfront to street; sandstone end-piers partly concealed at street level and chamfered at Row level; Row front has wrought-iron railing with spear-headed principal balusters and serpentine common balusters and scroll-ornamented double rail as in No.46 Street (qv); 2 cast-iron Doric columns; no stallboard; granolithic Row walk; painted rear wall to Row has modern framed and boarded double doors with a tripartite sash of 4;16;4 panes north and a 16-pane sash south, both with panelled shutters on HL hinges; boxed beam at each end; plastered ceiling; modillion cornice below covered bressumer to third storey. The upper storeys, of painted English garden wall bond brickwork, have 4 recessed 4-pane sashes with painted stone sills and gauged brick heads to the third storey, 4 similar sashes, but shorter, to the fourth storey, a 3-course dentil band at attic level; 2 sashes as to the fourth storey, but under blocked brick basket-arches with hood-courses and shaped brick keys; coped gable on corbelled attic-storey brick end- pilasters. INTERIOR: the cast-iron columns with simple basemoulds and foliar capitals are the only visible features of interest. Included for group value.
