3 undercroft shops and 3 Row shops with upper storeys probably formerly accommodation but now workshops and storage. Rebuilt 1889-90 by WM Boden. Ruabon brick, cast-iron and timber framing with plaster panels; red-brown clay tile roof, main ridge parallel with front. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys including undercroft and Row; 3 bays, symmetrical. The undercrofts have C20 shopfronts. Shaped splat balusters to Row front; brick end-piers; 2 intermediate supports, probably cast-iron, in square wooden cases with moulded capitals; boarded sloped stallboard 1-93m from front to back; boarded Row walk; C20 shopfronts; timber depressed arch on stone corbels with ornate pendant to each bay; shaped brackets support a tiled lean-to roof intersecting 3 canted 5-light mullioned oriels with concave sub-panels and leaded glazing above their transoms; a 9-inch English garden wall bond wall between and beside the oriels. 4 large shaped brackets support the jettied fourth storey: small framing; projecting central bay has a 4-light mock oriel on a concave sub-panel and with leaded glazing above the transom; a shallow 3-light canted oriel in each side-bay under a gablet with a pair of curved braces; bargeboards; a coved plastered jetty to the central gable which has a moulded tie-beam, S-curved herringbone struts, bargeboards and a shaped finial; 3 brick chimneys behind the ridge. INTERIOR: the undercrofts have 4 steps down from street to No.3, 5 steps to No.5 and 4 to No.7; the interiors are lined. The upper storeys, planned around a central lightwell glazed above the Row storey, have no visible individual features of special interest, but the structure may deserve note: September 16 1889 "...The old premises were constructed of [timber] and plaster about 4in. thick and, as space is very valuable, I propose to build all the partitions of 4.1/2in. Ruabon pressed bricks and hoop iron bands, using freely cast-iron joists and girders resting on strong pillars. The front wall below timber framing 9 in. thick and all basement
walls 9 in. When approved you can have copies for your use Yours very faithfully William M. Boden" The drawings were sent October 21 1889 to the City Council. (Improvement Committee Minutes: Chester City Council: 18/9 & 26/10/1889).
