Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SW 595-1/3/27 BLACK FRIARS (South side) Nos.6-14 (Even) II GV Row of 5 small town houses. Mid C19. Brown brick in Flemish bond to the front; grey slate roofs with ridge parallel with the street. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, each house having one bay. Painted brick plinth; painted stone or imitation stone doorcases with 1-pane segmental-arched overlights; door of 2 fielded panels above 2 flush panels to Nos 6 & 8, 6-panel door with small middle panels to Nos 10 & 14, door with 4 fielded panels and a lozenge-paned cross-panel with stout glazing bars to No.12. Painted stone sills and cambered blue-brick arched heads; No.6 has replaced small-pane windows, No.8 has recessed 4-pane horned sash to the first storey and replaced modern cross-casements with wooden sills in slightly enlarged openings to the upper storeys, Nos 10, 12 & 14 have recessed 12-pane sashes to all storeys; No.14 has 2 sashes to each upper storey, other houses one window to each storey; 2-course flush blue brick bands at sill level of each upper storey; corbelled rounded brick course beneath plain eaves which steps down, with slope of street, between Nos 8 & 10; ridge chimneys. The rear windows except to the upper storeys of No.14 are replaced; some first storey rear extensions and fire stairs. INTERIORS were not inspected. Listing NGR: SJ4029166015
