Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066NE ABBEY SQUARE 595-1/2/16 (North East side) 10/01/72 Bishop's House GV II Deanery now Bishop's house. Probably mid C18, added to and altered. Flemish bond brown brick with Westmorland green slate roof. EXTERIOR: basement and 2 storeys. The 5-window front is symmetrically disposed. Large added flat-roofed vestibule has a stone step to replaced double glazed doors with overlight in painted stone case with architrave, frieze, cornice and top-hamper; replaced glazing in window under wedge lintel to each side; cornice and parapet of one course of painted stone; 9-pane sash in return. West of the porch basement of painted stone has replaced small-pane double doors. The first storey has 2 tripartite recessed sashes of 4;12;4 panes west of the porch and a similar window east of porch plus a projecting brick bay with triple sash to front and a 12-pane sash in each return; painted stone cornice to flat roof. The second storey has, from west-east, a tripartite 4;12;4 pane sash, a 12-pane sash, a tripartite 4;12;4 pane sash in the projecting gabled central bay above the porch, with recessed stone coat-of-arms above the window, and two 12-pane sashes. A canted brick bay on the east end has a small-pane basement window in each oblique side and 3 recessed 12-pane sashes to each main storey. A projecting rear wing, west, has 2 arched small-paned basement openings, 3 flush 12-pane sashes to each upper storey and a pair of coped gables; another wing with miscellaneous fenestration.
