Description

CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4166 FOREGATE STREET 1932-1/6/107 (South side) 10/01/72 No.110 GV II Town house now shop and storage. Probably C17 origin, refurbished early C20. Timber framing to front with plaster panels; rear wall not visible; small grey slates to roof, ridge parallel with front. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys now expressed as 3 narrow bays. The front has freely expressed planted Classical features, probably added 1900-1910. Shopfront with 4 pilasters: entrance right with door of one pane above a pair of fielded panels, sidelights with fielded sub-panels and a simple overlight; rendered aprons to two shop windows; timber fascia with modillion cornice. The upper storeys are close-studded with only one cross-rail at attic floor-level. 4 planted timber pilasters rising from fascia-cornice to eaves. The tall first floor has unpierced central bay and a flush casement of two 6-pane lights in pedimented case standing proud of wall-face to each side-bay. The short attic storey has a 9-pane circular central window breaking the cross-rail; moulded timber string above cross-window and curving above window. Modillion eaves cornice. INTERIOR not inspected, but the facade suggests possible characteristics of interest in the upper storeys. Building vacant at time of survey (April 1992). Listing NGR: SJ4106266410
