Description

CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4066 FOREGATE STREET 1932-1/6/103 (South side) No.44 GV II Formerly known as: The Royal Oak Public House FOREGATE STREET. Town house, later public house, now shop. 1601 largely rebuilt in similar form 1920 by F Davies. Timber frame with plaster panels; grey slate roof; rear probably brick. EXTERIOR: the ground floor has 4 stanchions clad as if posts; late C20 shopfront. The intermediate posts have quadrant brackets carrying bressumer. The first floor has 3 rows of small-frame panels, the top row with quatrefoil braces; left and centre bays each have a canted 5-light oriel on quadrant brackets; the right bay has a mullioned and transomed 3-light casement with pargeted sign "YE OLDE ROYAL OAK HOTEL". The second floor, left and central bays jettied under a gable and right bay flush, has 2 rows of quadrant-braced panels to 2 bays and one row to the third bay; two 3-light canted oriels and a 4-light casement. All upper storey windows are leaded, those to the first floor patterned. The broad jettied front gable has decorated lozenge panels above a pargeted frieze; bargeboards and finial; the jetty beam is inscribed "1601 AD : REBUILT 1920 AD". Chimney right; a chimney behind ridge of front gable. The exposed left end has modern shop window; the close-studded first and second floors are unpierced.
