Listed Building: STABLE COURT NORTH OF EATON CHAPEL (1330616)

SJ 4160 EATON C.P. EATON PARK 9/67 Stable Court north of Eaton Chapel GV II* Stable Court circa 1873 by Alfred Waterhouse for the 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster. Stone-dressed red brick and oak half-timbering with roofs of shaped red tiles. Each side of the Court is described separately: South Range (against Chapel, Grotto and Postillion's House, all q.v.) Arched, buttressed entrance of stone-dressed brick to chapel narthex, centre, reached via 5 stone steps through porch and lobby with arched glazed screens containing glazed double doors of oak with linenfold panels. Ornate foliated 'W' at crown of gable above arch; pentice roof on brackets to each side. Stair turret with spire at corner, right. West Range (Grooms' accommodation above stabling) of 2 storeys; the lower is of stone-dressed brick, the upper oak-framed. Arched central carriage entrance, vaulted in 2 bays with stone ribs and panels banded in brick and stone. 4 ornate stone chimneys and 2 tiled fleches over ventilators. The almost symmetrical elevation to the court has mullioned windows in shaped openings below and a gabled upper storey with arch bracing and varied plaster panels, carved oak bargeboards and finials. To the Drive the elevation is symmetrical with 6 gables, paired, which have ornate plaster panels and heavy carved oak bargeboards and finails; mullioned and transomed windows with patterned leaded glazing. No internal features of special interest. The North Range, of stone-dressed red brick, is symmetrical. The arched central gateway with conical-roofed stair turrets to each side, is flanked by 3-bay pointed-arched galleries in 2 tiers; the upper tier is linked behind the stair turrets to an arched viewing chamber above the gateway. The glass roof of the coach-house court (q.v.) interrupts the north front. Interior: Former tack rooms east of the gateway are now a dining room with boarded ceiling on heavy moulded pine beams and library with similar ceiling carried on stone corbels, panelled walls and 9-panel hardwood doors. The East Range, stone and red brick, 1½ storeys, has 3 porches to yard wtih oak-framed gables, moulded tie beams and bargeboards. Mullioned windows with Caernarvon arch heads to lights; 4 tall gables in roof with cross casements; 2 ornately louvred ventilation fleches clad in ornate copperwork; iron-studded 12-panelled oak doors to former stables on ornate wrought iron hinges. The outer elevation (to the East Garden), of stone-dressed brick, is relatively plain. Interior: The Long Room (the former stables converted to a drawing room) has a finely wrought timber roof with shaped kingposts and tie beams and arched braces. 3 stone and marble chimney-pieces by Alfred Waterhouse, removed from Saloon of Eaton Hall before demolition, with alabaster panels designed by Milner Allen, depicting the Court of Love. ... -. - - Listing NGR: SJ4139060815
