Description
SJ 4160 EATON C.P. WESTERN FORECOURT TO EATON HALL
9/97 Equestrian Statue of Hugh Lupus, 1st Earl of Chester
II*
Equestrian Statue, 1870-9, by G F Watts for 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster. Bronze on battered plinth of buff stone at centre of pond. Hugh Lupus, 1st (Norman) Earl of Chester, falcon on raised gauntletted wrist, is seated on a horse the model for which was bred for the purpose from a Percheron mare and an English thoroughbred stallion. Sculptor and client strove for historic accuracy in every detail; both considered the statue to be Watts's chef d' oeuvre (Gervas Huxley).
