Description
SJ 45 SE BARTON C.P. BROXTON ROAD North Side
3/9 Barton Well (spout, shelter and 2 troughs)
- II
Water-spout, shelter and 2 troughs 1782? of stone. Rectangular troughs cut from massive sandstone blocks. The rear part of the troughs is roofed (about 0.70 metre above their rims) with 2 large slabs of stone supported by 3 corbel-shaped vertical slabs. An iron spout feeds the west trough. The troughs face away from the road; the stone retaining wall at their rear is beneath the back of the pavement. Probably built when the road was turnpiked in 1782.
