Description
SJ 46 SW HUNTINGTON C P ALDFORD ROAD (West Side)
5/46 Grange Farmhouse.
1/6/1967 II
Farmhouse: dated 1653, upper storey rebuilt late C18 and late C19 addition to rear. English garden wall bond and Flemish bond orange brick. Welsh slate roof and 2 brick chimneys. Rectangular plan with 2 short ranges to rear. 3-storey, symmetrical 3-bay front. Brick plinth, plain pilasters between bays on ground and 1st floor and a moulded band at 1st floor, treated as a cornice with remains of keyblocks over the windows (or possibly indications of central pilasters). End bays have inserted 3-light windows with small-pane iron casements under cambered brick heads, with 2-light casements in half dormers in top storey. Projecting gabled 3-storey porch has 4-centred headed stone doorcase with restored lintel reading AD 1653 EBM, and graffito GV 1755 on jamb. 2 small windows above. Plain band on both floors of the remainder. Interior: 1 chamfered ceiling beam and a restored 4-centred headed stone fireplace. Remaining fittings in pine. - If the date is correct, this is remarkably early use of classical detailing on a vernacular building.
