Description

SJ 4160 9/73 EATON C.P. EATON PARK GARDENS Walls, with Pair of Gates and Overthrow, central, along southern boundary of Walled Garden II* Twelve foot Wall and Gate Piers, c1870, by Alfred Waterhouse for 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster, Gates and Overthrow, by Edwin Lutyens c1890s. The walls are of brown brick, the piers brick and red sandstone, the gates wrought iron painted gold and black. The walls have steeply weathered corbelled brick copings, the piers flush stone quoins, classically moulded stone plinths and caps and ball finials surmounted by cones. The gates have lockrails of rich scrollwork with a symmetrical panel above composed of foliated W's, coronets and scrollwork. Below the lockrails are closely spaced formed and curved bars with floral and foliated motifs and scrollwork. The triangular overthrow of scrollwork bears a central portcullis medallion and is crowned by the Grosvenor sheaf. Narrow ornate wrought iron side screens divide the gates from the piers. In richness of design and detailing, these gates are second in the Eaton Estate to the Golden Gates (q.v.). They divide the major eastern ornamental garden from the walled kitchen and nursery gardens. Listing NGR: SJ4154560934
