Description

SJ 87 NW ALDERLEY EDGE C.P. MACCLESFIELD ROAD (North Side) 4/59 Gatehouse, dovecote and attached walls at Broomfield House. 16/7/1979 GV II Gatehouse and adjoining walls: dated 1875 by and for Thomas Worthington. Closely jointed random sandstone rubble, ashlar dressings. Graduated Welsh slate roof. Forms 3 sides of a small court added to corner of the house. South face is a wall with a triangular headed chamfered opening with 18TW75 on tablet above. Wall turns to join gatehouse which has 2 tall chamfered 4-centred arches (1 blocked) with an arrow slit in stone coped gable above. On ridge is a square wooden dovecote with a tall pyramidal roof and weathervane. From its south-west corner runs a low wall with a triangular and beaded coping ending in a plinth for a cast-iron former gas lamp. It has a circular post which has a cage of 4 scrolled brackets and supports spherical light with a Gothick top. Listing NGR: SJ8481777841
