Description
SJ 98 SW ADLINGTON C.P. MILL LANE (South Side)
3/21 "The Pillars" 140m south east of the Garden Cottage at Adlington Hall
II
Pair of gate piers: mid C18 for Charles Legh. Ashlar buff sandstone. Slightly tapering plain square body of each pier stands on a tall plinth with a moulded top. The capstones with well carved unicorn's heads now stand on the wall of stable courtyard (q.v.) where they were moved c1960. The piers must have been very grand and stood astride the main south approach leading to the new stable block. A moving of the turnpike road in 1801 left them isolated.
