SJ 88 SW WILMSLOW FORMER U.D. ALTRINCHAM ROAD (South Side) Styal 1/263 Oak Farmhouse 30/3/1951 GV II* Farmhouse: early C16 with C17 alterations, late C18 brick facade to south side, additions c.1860 by J.S. Crowther and C20 restoration. Timber-framed with brick and plaster infill, on stone plinth. Brick additions to rear. Kerridge stone-slate roof and 4 brick chimneys with Tudor-style diamond stacks. Long rectangular plan with cross-wing. 2-storey, 4-bay front. Left end is gabled crosswing and shows a full cruck truss with spurs to the wall plates. 3-light casement below, 4-light above partly with original leaded glazing. Timber decoration of roundels and chevroning between the windows. Remainder is in close-studding with middle rail with angle bracing of the wall plate. 2nd bay has 3-light casement below and 2-light above partly with original lattice leaded glazing, the upper one in a gabled dormer with a coving above the window. Door in C19 frame in 3rd bay and 2-light casement in right end bay. Left end has 2-storey, 3-bay brick front with 3-light small-pane casements and later C19 timber-framed porch. 2 portions to rear in orange brick include a former diary and have a verandah on timber posts. Some blue brick diapering and wood mullioned windows. Interior: Cross-wing has 3 full cruck trusses but remainder of interior of C18 and later. Main range also has 3 full cruck trusses. Central ashlar fireplace with candle niches. Main room has inserted C17 floor, chamfered ceiling beams, fire beam and heck post and screen. Room at north end has a panel from part of a grisaille mural showing the winged lion of St Mark. Listing NGR: SJ8341683646
