SJ 87 NW NETHER ALDERLEY C.P. CONGLETON ROAD (West Side) 4/132 Eagle and Child Cottage 14/4/1967 GV II Originally a farmhouse, later an inn, now a house: C17 with later C17 outshut and guttering dated 1688, west range added later C18. L-shaped plan. North range is timber framed with brick nogging, on a sandstone plinth, Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge and 3 brick chimneys. 2-storey, 2-bay north front. Small framing with small panelling under upper windows. Left bay has board door in bead-moulded doorcase and 5-light wood mullioned window with lattice leaded glazing under coved overhang in a gabled half dormer with herringboning in the gable. To right bay steps forward under gable with 5-light chamfered wood mullioned window with lattice leaded glazing below and similar 3-light with rectangular lead glazing above. Outshut added to rear in timber framing. Black painted lead guttering reads TD 1688. Interior: Bead moulded ceiling beams Cyma-moulded stone corner fireplace. Large cellars with stone flight of steps. West range is in washed English garden wall bond brick with Kerridge stone slate roof, stone ridge and 2 brick chimneys. Right 4 bays was a separate house and has segmental rough brick heads to 2-light wooden casements. To left is former coachhouse now garage and conservatory. This range is joined to the other by a single storey passage. Listing NGR: SJ8433476133
