Description

SJ 98 SW ADLINGTON C.P. MILL LANE (South Side) 3/28 Gate piers and gates to north approach of Adlington Hall. 14/4/1967 GV II Gate piers and gates: late C17. Rusticated ashlar sandstone gate piers on moulded plinths have a projecting moulded band below a projecting moulded capstone. This is stepped above and supports a ball finial. Between are a pair of iron gates of closely spaced square bars, some with serpentine points. The right hand gate has a smaller gate within it. To the rear of the piers are raking octagonal cast-iron posts with 10 horizontal bands and a shaped top to which the gates can be fastened when open. The gates are very similar to those at the end of the lime avenue in the hall's gardens (q.v.) which are dated 1688. Listing NGR: SJ9058080583
