Description
TOFT C.P. HOLMES CHAPEL ROAD SJ 77 NE
2/109 The Lodge
G.V. II
Two cottages, now one house. Late C18/Early C19 with mid C19 additions. Red English garden wall bond brick with slate -roof. Two storeys. Road front: Earlier portion to left of 2 bays with C19 gabled porch to centre with tree trunks and branches to gable. One 3-light casement window to each side with Tudor hood moulds. Two similar windows to first floor without hood moulds. To the right is the addition of c1850 with a ground floor recessed door to the right with a two-light mullioned window to the first floor with a stone lintel and sill. The gabled ridge beam and purlins have decorated ends and there is a slender decorated bargeboard above these. C19 outshut. The mid C19 building may be attributable to W & G Habetshon who designed the Church of St John the Evangelist (q.v.) nearby at the same time. This house was its vicarage and the gable ends show something of the same free interpretation as the church.
