TOFT C.P. (off) HOLMES CHAPEL ROAD SJ 77 NE 2/111 Toft Hall 15 12 81 G.V. II* Country House. Late C17 with C18, C19 and C20 additions and alterations. Rendered brick with stone dressings and slate roof. Two storeys with attics and four storey towers. Rear (original entrance front): Originally a shallow E in plan with a two-storey porch projection and lateral projecting wings. Central four-storey tower with projecting quoins to corners, modillion cornice and Tudor hood moulds to windows. Central doorway with moulded stone surround and five stone panels above with coats of arms. One bay to either side, those to ground floor project beyond the original position. 3 x 4 pane sash windows to first floor. To either side of this are projecting late C18 wings with semi-octagonal ends added to the re-entrant angles of the original projecting lateral wings. These each have 3 French windows to the ground floor and 3 first floor windows of 3 x 3 panes all with Tudor hood moulds, hipped roofs with ball finials. Continuous C20 wooden canopy before these extending in front of central three bays where C20 horizontaly sliding glazed doors have been added. Ogee-shaped lead roof. To right and left are the original gabled wings of 2 bays, to the ground and first floors with single bays to the gables, all with Tudor hood-moulds. Stone copings and ball finials to summits. To the right is an addition of c1870 with projecting quoins. Rear (present entrance front): Central projecting four-storey tower (a copy of that in the original entrance front). Similar central doorway with coats of arms over. Windows of 3 x 4 sash panes to first and second floors. Band between ground and first floors and string courses between first and second and second and third floors. Four bays to either side with Tudor hood moulds. Two C19 gabled attic dormers to either side. Projecting wings to extreme left and right with projecting quoins. Two bays to ground and first floors and one to gables. Stone copings and finials at summits. Interior: Late C17 staircase of four flights with barley-sugar balusters and panelled newels. Mid C18 open well staircase with turned balusters, ramped rail with dado panelling to wall. Oval oculus over. Some early C18 small framing to upstairs wall. The blue room has C19 Neo-classical decoration including scagliola pilasters with Corinthian capitals and painted wall panels. Panelled ceiling. At the time of the resurvey (1984) the house was undergoing extensive restoration and many internal features had been removed to store. The removal of the internal plasterwork revealed blocked windows in the study and library confirming that these rooms were imposed in the re-entrant angles of an earlier E-shaped house.
