Description

SMALLWOOD C.P. SJ 86 SW 4/101 CHURCH LANE Church of St John Baptist GV II Church. 1845. By C & J Trubshaw. Coursed yellow sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. Nave. South-west porch and north-eastern vestry. The nave has to its western end a projecting plinth common to the whole building, two lancet windows above a stepped string-course. Angle buttresses to the corners. Lancet to gable, which has an ashlar coping and supports an ashlar bellcote with offsets and a single bell-opening. The southern face has a projecting gabled porch at left of centre with a moulded archway. To left of this are a pair of lancets and at right are two single lancets and a pair of lancets divided by buttresses with offsets. Similar arrangement of raised lancets to the north side with a gabled projecting vestry at left. The chancel has 2 windows at south with Y-tracery. The eastern window is of 3 stepped lights and the north side has one Y-tracery window at right. Interior: The nave has 6 pseudo-hammerbeam trusses which rest upon ashlar corbels. The chancel roof has three trusses with arched braces. To the western end of the nave is an organ case with a panelled wooden lower body and painted pipes above. Listing NGR: SJ8061060152
