Description
ODD RODE C.P. STATION ROAD SJ 85 NW 7/94 Gatepiers and gates to Ramsdell Hall
- II
Pair of gatepiers of early C18 date with pair of gates of late C18 date. Yellow sandstone ashlar supporting trophies of Portland stone. Piers of square plan having projecting plinths with moulded tops. The corners are slightly recessed and have blocks of vermiculated rustication which project to be flush with the central panels. To the tops of these corners are short pieces of cavetto moulding with bay leaf decoration which in effect form a frieze to the capitals which are cyma-moulded. The centre of each face is of plain ashlar with a projecting panel to its centre with ovolo-moulded edge and arched tops and bottoms. To the top of each pier is an eagle bearing a shield with a laurel wreath surround and a hog's head crest in relief, all carved in Portland stone. The double gates have an arched overthrow with C-scrolls and repousse leaves. The gates have dog and lock rails filled with C-scrolls.
