SWETTENHAM C.P. SWETTENHAM ROAD SJ 86 NW 5/43 Swettenham Mill 14.2.67 GV II Water powered mill, 1675 (carved on timber beam at first floor) with additions 1714 (stone set low in wall) and 1765 (stone tablet high in brick gable). Brick nogged timber frame and brickwork formerly with stone slate roof now machine tiles. 3 storeys, 4 truss bays, a single bay return completes an "L" shaped plan. Timber framed south gable-end and parts of two return walls, timbers painted on brickwork. Main door (west) of boards on strap hinges. Flush casement windows. Lower parts of walls near wheel of sandstone blocks. The later dates have respectively the initials W.S. and T.S. accompanying them. Interior: The wheel is a modified overshot called a Pitchback where the water is held to the wheel for half its circumference. This drives five sets of stones but has also been adapted to power a saw and provide electricity. Oak beams and large ceiling joists. The roof has oak strutted trusses, purlins and ridge tree.
