Description
BRERETON C.P. NEWCASTLE ROAD SJ 76 SE (East Side)
7/20 Holly Cottage 14/2/1967 - II
Cottage, probably early C17, altered. Oak frame and brick, pebbledashed; clay tile roof of steep pitch probably formerly thatched. 1 storey plus attic. Small casements mostly of C19 vernacular type. Oak frame exposed on left gable with flush gable chimney; this was formerly a central ridge chimney, the adjoining cottage to left having been demolished circa 1965. Interior: Stopped ovolo beam, on shaped bracket at rear; altered inglenook with lower edge of oak bressumer partly cut away to increase headroom; lightly chamfered oak joists; small frame visible at rear of parlour and bedroom and on gable walls upstairs; tie-beam in left gable-end on jowled bracket above bedroom floor level (and as seen externally) suggest a possible former open-hall dwelling incorporating Holly Cottage and its demolished neighbour.
