Description

The following ammendment shall be made to the list description for Item 2/15:- SJ 55 NE BUNBURY BOWE'S GATE ROAD 2/15 West gates to St Boniface's Churchyard GV II Three pairs of gates and piers,erected 1920 as World War 1 memorial gate. A pair of high standing sandstone ashlar piers, supporting the main timber gates, are flanked by wicket gates and lower piers. The piers have ogee moulded plinths. The main gate piers are recessed on their west faces for bronze war memorial name plates which carry the inscriptions "LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND" and "THESE FOR ENGLAND DIED" these are surmounted by oak lead and acorn motifs and the dates 1914, 1939 and 1919, 1945 are above and below the war dead. The pier caps have ogee cornices and ball finials and support an overthrow of square rods which has a tapering hexagonal lamp at the centre. The lower piers have scotia moulded caps with 4-way weathered tops. The oak gates are divided into square panels by horizontal and vertical timbers and there is cross bracing to the upper panels of the main gates. SJ 55 NE BUNBURY C.P.
