WINSFORD FORMER U.D. VALE ROYAL PARK SJ 66 NW 6395 6990 4/117 The Nun's Grave Cross
G.V. II Cross, shaft and base. C19 amalgamation of pieces of stonework of various dates. The base apparently C14, the shaft of C17 date and the top of probable C15 date. Red and yellow Bunter and Keuper Sandstone. Multi-faceted base, apparently previously a column base, octagonal with semi-octagons to four of the faces. Octagonal shaft above supporting a rectangular cross head which has cusped ogee-arched niches containing statues of the crucifixion and saints. Crockets above this and to the lower body. Around the cross and laid on the ground are further fragments of moulded stone from the demolished abbey building which are not included in the item.
