Description

DAVENHAM C.P. (Off) LONDON ROAD SJ 67 SE 2/39 Davenham Hall 3.1.67 - II* Country house. Mid/Late C18 with substantial early C19 addition. Stuccoed brick, slate roof with lead flashings. Two storeys. Entrance front early C19 in date with six bays symmetrically disposed. Band at level of first floor window sills and moulded cornice at eaves level. Central two bays project slightly with a ground floor porch of three bays with paired columns to the sides and single columns to the centre all of a Roman Tuscan form although having flutings to the top as in Delian order. Entablature above with triglyphs. Central double ½-glazed doors beneath this and lateral sash windows of 3 x 4 panes. Two ground floor windows to either side of 3 x 4 panes, those at left being blank. Six first-floor windows are all of 3 x 4 panes the central two slightly projecting bays having a pediment above and a parapet to either side. Left hand return includes original 3 bay mid/late C18 farmhouse at right. Interior: Entrance hall: moulded ceiling with Greek motifs and granite fire surround. Staircase Hall: Open well staircase of 3 flights with two screens of 4 fluted Doric columns bearing entablatures. Fan-shaped fluting to the pendentives with circular lantern carrying dome.
